The Poster as an Object

A workshop with Vrints-Kolsteren

What to expect?
This workshop interrogates the poster as a medium that exceeds its conventional role as a two-dimensional vehicle for communication. Taking the printed poster as our point of departure, we will examine the ways in which material interventions – folding, layering, cutting, embossing, and other treatments – destabilize its status as a flat surface and reconfigure it as an object. Participants will engage with the poster as a site where print, materiality, and spatial presence intersect, considering how such transformations challenge established notions of display, circulation, and reception.

Through both discussion and hands-on experimentation, the workshop invites participants to critically reflect on how the physical qualities of print can shape meaning beyond image and text. By treating the poster as an object, rather than simply a communicative surface, we open questions about tactility, durability, and temporality, as well as the ways in which printed matter occupies space and interacts with its environment.

Vrints-Kolsteren

Vrints-Kolsteren is an Antwerp-based design studio uniting typography and visual systems to create identities that evolve with time and context. Founded in 2015 by Vincent Vrints and Naomi Kolsteren, the studio works locally and internationally across a wide range of projects, from cultural institutions and contemporary art initiatives to independent makers and organizations.

At the core of their practice is a belief in design as a collaborative process. Vrints-Kolsteren approaches each commission as a partnership, fostering equal dialogue with clients and collaborators in order to shape outcomes that feel both personal and enduring. Their work often begins with the development of adaptable systems – frameworks of rules and structures – that balance consistency with openness, allowing identities to grow organically.

The studio’s visual language reflects a deep engagement with modernist traditions, particularly in their attention to form, line, and composition, as well as their rigorous use of grids and rulesets. At the same time, Vrints-Kolsteren seeks to disrupt these foundations by introducing organic gestures and unexpected irregularities, creating a dialogue between order and expression.

Through this synthesis of clarity and experimentation, Vrints-Kolsteren has created branding systems, publications, campaigns, and visual identities that resonate across scales – whether shaping the public presence of global organizations or supporting intimate, community-driven initiatives.
